Because You Cared...
for the Lord’s work at EOM in 2002,
365 programs were
produced and broadcasted from the radio station in Germany to over fifteen
million people in over twenty-three countries
53 weekly Bible studies
were produced and transmitted over our website. Close to eleven thousand
Ethiopians benefited from these studies.
12 full-length teachings
were produced on cassette tapes and distributed to thousands from our offices
and representative stations in the US, Ethiopia, Kenya, Yemen, Beirut,
India and Sweden.
Six issues of “Yehiwot
Mestawot” (Mirror of Life) Bible studies were produced in a quantity of
over 120,00 each and being distributed all over the world among Ethiopians.
Brother Melese was
able to travel to the mission field in France, Djibouti, Kenya, Beirut
and United Arab Emirates to preach the gospel, train lay ministers and
encourage believers with the word of God.
Numerous individuals
received counseling by hone and some by coming to the EOM’s office in York.
Dear friends, we can keep sharing with you one after another how people’s
lives have been touched and changed through the teachings coming out of
this ministry. The letters and e-mails we receive every week overwhelm
us and at the same time humble us how God uses simple people like us to
reach out and touch people. Perhaps we should not be surprised by it because
we know when he picked his first twelve disciples, he picked simple fishermen
turned them into fishers of men. Here is a portion of one letter
that will give you some idea what your partnership with EOM and your financial
and prayer support did in 2002.
Dear servants of God,
Grace, peace and love of God be with you
through Jesus Christ. I filled with joy when I write you for I know you
receive me and meet my spiritual needs. Thank you for the cassette tapes
and Mirror of Life bible studies you send me regularly. Recently, I get
hold of one your teachings titled “it Costs To Following Christ” and shared
it with a new believer in the military camp here in one of the deserts
in Eritrea. God used this taped message in a miraculous way. (Please note
that the government bans Christianity. Those who are found listening to
Christian tapes or radio programs, reading the Bible or any Christian literature
will be thrown in jail). This new believer was found listening to this
particular tape I gave him and was thrown in jail. Those who were listening
with him were also thrown in jail for three months “paying the price for
their faith”. While these new believers were in jail, one Christian sister
was ordered by the chief commander of the military camp to translate the
contents of the taped message into the local language. With that
translation, more people in the high rank of the military were able to
hear the message of the gospel. Those who were in prison for three months
came out with more harvest from the prison. Apparently, they were busy
sharing their faith in the jail with other inmates and God used them to
bring many more souls to the Kingdom. May the Lord be glorified.
While I was in the desert military camp, your daily radio broadcast
‘Yenigat Kokeb Dimts’ has been the primary source of spiritual nourishment
to me and to many of fellow believers. Thank you for your commitment to
minister to us.
A.B., Eritrea
All we can say to you for your part of commitment is Thank you and God
bless you. Keep up the good work friends. Your investment is yielding hundred
folds every year.
God has been faithful through the years and he did it again in 2002
as well. The year has been rather difficult financially. Giving has been
very low for various reasons but God’s work continue regardless. You have
responded sacrificially when we shared with you the pressing needs we had
in the past year. We continue to be your extensions to the millions of
Ethiopians sharing the love Christ and extending His Grace. May the Lord
bless you in 2003 more abundantly as you continue serving Him. ?

The Imprints of
a Departed Friend of
EOM... Betty Torrey
In our April-June 1998 News & Views
issue, we shared with you how a zeal for missions that spans three generations
impacted millions of Ethiopians around the world through Ethiopian Outreach
Ministry. Betty Torrey Almquist, one of that generation, departed from
this life and entered into eternity on November 1, 2002.
Of the many wonderful things that can be said by all who came to know
Betty for five minutes or five years, one stands out the most - she loved
people unconditionally and do what she can to make life easier for others
for one and only one reason: She loved God.
Since the inception of EOM, Betty was part of the outreach effort in
various ways. Her prayers, concerns expressed in her financial support
and taking care of needs of the ministry will always be remembered. She
was truly a friend, partner, supporter, encourager and most of all prayer
warrior. She will be missed by all of us her at EOM.
Sossena, EOM’s staff shares the following in memory of Betty.
I first met Betty in a Women's Growth Group at Living Word Community
Church in 1998. At the time I was a co-leader of one of the women's group.
Shortly after that when the leader of my group resigned from leadership,
Betty and I were put together to continue leading the group. It was
an honor for me to serve with 'the First Mother' as some people called
Betty because she was our pastor's mother. All the women and I who
were in the group with her benefited from Betty's wisdom and kindness.
Betty Torrey was a kind woman who had a heart among many things for
single mothers. She supported those of us who were single through her prayers
and counsel. Also, if she saw a financial need she was there to quietly
meet that need. I have benefited from Betty's generosity numerous
times. Those of us who knew Betty know that her kindness and generosity
came from her long time relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
When Betty's health started to fail and she started being dependent
on other people for simple things, I saw the character of a submissive
woman shine. Although she struggled with the changes in her life she was
quick to entrust herself to the Lord. She showed a lot of self-control
during the times when she had to give up driving and later on her home.
She often said she didn't want to be too difficult for her children. She
seemed to be more concerned about her family than herself.
When she finally wasn't able to attend our group anymore some of us
would go and visit her at the care facility she was in. When we were
there I noticed that she tried hard to remember and ask about our families
and the different things that were going on in each of our lives. Betty
was a caring and unselfish woman. During one of our visits we found her
in the activity room standing in the middle of a big circle of elderly
men and women with a ball in her hand trying to cheer them up.
She would throw the ball to one or kick it to the other while saying
loving and encouraging words to them. It was such a beautiful sight to
see Betty rise above her difficult situation and serve others who seemed
to be worse off than her.
Betty had a great sense of humor and was able to make the best of her
situation. She would tell us funny stories about the things that happened
as she tried to make friends and even witness to the residents at the facility.
One of my favorite stories she told was her dinning room experience. We
asked her how she got along with the people at her table. She laughed and
told us that she couldn't communicate with them because she was the only
hearing person at the table. She seemed to get a kick out of telling us
that story.
When Betty got squeezed by a failing health, loss of independence and
loss of her home, all that spilled out from her was kindness, unselfishness,
generosity, sweetness, self-control, patience, peace, love and so much
more. All this was true of her because she was a truly changed woman
who was controlled by the Spirit and not the flesh (Roman 8:1-17).
The last time I saw Betty was a week before she went on to be with
the Lord. My friend Kim and I were shocked to see the state she was in
physically, unable to hear, speak or do anything. I had mixed feelings
of sadness and joy. I was sad because of the obvious reasons but my joy
came from knowing that though physically she was dying her soul will soon
pass on to the afterlife to live eternally with her Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. Today that is where she is. I am grateful to God for
the privilege of having known and served with Betty.
