What EOM is All About

Since its humble beginning, Ethiopian Outreach Ministry has been all about the Lord's command in Matt. 28:19&20.  It states, "...Go and make disciples of all nations...teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."

Twenty years ago, when brother Melese used a simple cassette recorder to prepare encouraging messages from the Bible to distribute among a few Ethiopian believers he knew in the United States, he never imagined the tape ministry would expand to  Ethiopians in over forty countries today.  Not only that but EOM's daily radio broadcast is now reaching millions of Ethiopians in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and part of Asia.

A recent letter received from an Ethiopian who is a new believer in East Africa reminded us to pause for a moment and reflect on God's unique plan for Ethiopians to hear the Gospel and be strengthened in their faith through the various teaching and discipleship resources produced by this ministry.

"Dear brother Melese,  My name is Tsion H. I am writing from Asmara.  I am a regular listener of your daily radio program and a frequent visitor of your web-site.  I found your radio broadcast while I was browsing through various signals on my short-wave radio.  To me, your radio program is a unique gift from God.  I am a new born Christian and I desperately needed teachings of the pure word of God.

By Ms. Lois Anderson

In August, 2001, as I was about to leave the Philadelphia area to return to my childhood environment of York, PA., I was asked at a Bible class what ministry I planned to have when I moved to York.  Immediately, I replied that I was familiar, to a small degree, with the Ethiopian Outreach Ministry whose headquarters is in York, as I had known the Founder/Director, the Rev. Melese Wogu, when I was in Ethiopia.  I planned to volunteer time; perhaps stuff envelopes, stamp letters, etc.

I had never seen the offices of the organization, but after
having moved to the York area, I located them in the center

of York on the second story of a building on Duke Street across from the Yorktowne Hotel.  I was astounded by what I saw that day - three Ethiopian nationals: Melese Wogu the Founder and Executive Director of the Ministry, Misiker Kebede, Director of Technical and Development Support, and Sossena Maybury, the Secretary - servants of the Lord, dedicated to the ministry of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with fellow Ethiopians; those living outside of their homeland as well as in Ethiopia.

GRATITUDE

We are grateful to the thirteen friends of EOM who gave towards the purchase of a brand new automatic paper folding machine.  It has been a couple of years since the need for this machine was announced in our past News & Views publications.

Recently, a dear friend of the ministry, Ms. Lois R. Anderson of York , PA wanted to make this project a reality.  With God's help, her relatives and close friends that she approached contributed the balance of the money needed to acquire the machine. To all of you who gave so sacrificially, we say THANK YOU and pray that the Lord's blessings be upon you as you bless His work.

Your gifts will enable us to be more effective in the production of large volume of Christian publication that is being used among Ethiopians throughout the world

  • Special thank you to the individual brothers and sisters who donated their time and energy helping with cassette duplicating, labeling, stuffing envelopes and help with the mailing process.  May the Lord bless you all.
  • We are grateful to brother Tadesse Ayalew from Washington, D.C. for sending a special gift to secure an electronic postage scale.

But Be Careful... (Continued...)
Their five rooms are modestly furnished for their basic needs;  their mid-level high tech equipment is the best that they can secure for their multifaceted ministry.  To see the numerous cassettes, videos, literature, etc. that is mailed out from this headquarters is an awesome sight.

EOM depends on the Lord's provision to supply all their needs.  A few churches have the ministry in their mission budgets, individuals contribute to the outreach and twice a year they serve a meal of delectable Ethiopian food.  They don't charge for the meal, but people who know of their tremendous work, give generously for the ministry.

Most Americans know little about sacrificial giving as the Macedonians in the first century did.  The Bible says in 2 Cor. 8:2,3 that the Macedonians were going through much trouble and hard times; thus; "...their wonderful joy and deep poverty have overflowed in rich generosity - they gave not only what they could afford but far more - of their own free will."  Our American way of spending for trivia can be altered, and the money saved can be used to the glory of God in reaching others with the Gospel... Why not call for an appointment to see the EOM headquarters for yourself?  (I can be there to show you the facility)  - but be careful - it may be a life changing experience ... It has been for me!
Ethiopian Dinner Banquet was Successful
Ethiopian Dinner Banquet that held on Saturday May 4, 2002 was successful and well attended.  We thank those of you who came and showed us your support with your encouragement and generous financial gifts.  We also want to thank our friends who were not able to come to the dinner but sent in their financial support.  We also received support from partners in the ministry who live as far as California.  What a commitment!  Thank you all for making a difference in the life of thousands of Ethiopians by enabling EOM to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ through various means.  May the Lord bless you abundantly.

The next banquet is Saturday, October 12, 2002.  Mark your calendar, involve the mission program leaders of your church, family and friends.  We encourage you to plan ahead to keep the tradition and to have a new experience for those of you who never had the opportunity to taste the delicious authentic Ethiopian dishes.

What EOM is all about... (continued)
Thank you for delivering just that.  Now I know I can grow strong and healthy in my faith.
I would be indebted to you if you can send me a few resources you produced that will help me grow in my faith."

Another Ethiopian sister from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia wrote,
" Dear servants of the Lord,
I want to thank you for the nourishing spiritual food you have prepared and delivered to me and to many Ethiopian believers over your radio programs here in Jeddah.  Many sisters and I who live in Saudi Arabia working as maids for Saudi families, don't have much freedom to practice our faith.  The working hours are long and we are constantly at work.  But I never want to miss any of your teachings because missing your program is like starving my soul.  At times, I hang my small short wave radio around my neck and listen to your teachings as I work around the house.  I cannot afford missing your teachings.  Thank you

for ministering to me in this special way.  It has helped me grow in my walk with the Lord.  I am in a much better position today to share the Love of Christ with others than six months ago.  May the Lord bless you.

Your sister in Christ, E.M.

In addition to the radio broadcast, tape ministry and Internet Audio streaming, the various bimonthly Bible study publications, books and tracts are being distributed among millions of Ethiopians introducing them to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.  Believers are also discipled, trained and equipped to serve Christ's church on earth.  And that is what EOM is all about.  Evangelizing, teaching, discipling, training Christians, empowering them for maturity and leadership in order to extend the grace of God into a broken and searching world.

To all partners of this ministry who have prayed and gave to the Lord's work so sacrificially, we want to say thank you on behalf of all those whose life is impacted through your prayers and gifts.

Dear Producers of Voice of Morning Star Radio,

You don't know how much joy it gives me to write this letter to you.  Please do not underestimate the impact of your ministry.  I want to emphasize the importance of your daily radio program.  I myself was introduced to Christ and accepted Him as my personal savior and Lord through another radio program.  It is my prayer that your ministry continues to grow and be strengthened.

The uniqueness of your ministry can be described in many of its distinct teaching solely based on the Bible.  Your messages from the Scriptures speak to all Ethiopians.  Your ministry does not discriminate between people's groups or languages.  Thank you for the encouraging and uplifting messages aired daily over the radio waves.  I thank God that I am being served through your radio ministry in this place where there is a strong spiritual opposition.  Your program is like cold water to a thirsty soul.

We used to be able to get spiritual material from Ethiopia before war broke between the two countries.  Now there is no direct mail so we can't get anything.  If it is possible, please send us books, tapes and Bible study materials that will help is walk closer with Jesus.

May God's grace and peace be with you.

Tewodros Y. (Assab, Eritrea)

Dear servants of the Lord,

Grace be to you all.

I am writing this just to let you know how much I appreciate your radio ministry and what it means to me.  The signal of your program's transmission is so clear it sounds like the transmitter is right in Ethiopia.

Through your daily teachings, the Lord already started to mold me, correct me and guide me how to be free from my bondage of sin.  Thank you for delivering the message of the Bible in a very practical and life applicable way.

God bless you and provide you with all the resources you need to continue serving Ethiopians everywhere.

Sincerely,

Eden M. (Ethiopia)

Dear Brother Melese,

Recently, you presented a message on your daily broadcast titled, "Give us our daily bread."

Now I have a better and deeper understanding of the Lord's Prayer.  It helps me how to pray effectively.  I look forward to hearing the series messages on the Lord's Prayer in the coming days.  Thank you for ministering to us.  You are a great help to our spiritual growth.  Thank you and God bless.
